Transcript a year in review LANA KHAWAJA The Houstonian yearbook staff has a difficult job to accomplish each year — to create a book with a broad range of ideas to interest the University of Houston community. The book not only includes activities occurring on campus, but also issues and events in the community that affect students. As a staff photographer, junior studio art major Pete Medrano said he enjoys taking pictures of students at events that they will possibly remember forever. "Working for the yearbook gives me a chance to broaden my outlook on school activities and events," Medrano said. Since its first year of publication in 1934, students are essential to the outcome of the book. But it is up to the yearbook staff to complete the time capsule of events, issues and lives, filled with pictures and words that reveal the emotions of the year. "People don't realize how much time and effort goes into putting a book together," said Campus Editor Maria Ramos, a junior journalism major. Ramos and other section editors come up with story ideas to interest readers, then request that the story is assigned to a writer and make sure that a photographer will take pictures. "The fact that we see each other daily and help each other out, but don't work closely as a group, gives us a lot more freedom for individuality," Ramos said. Senior journalism major Lisa Chmiola, the Houstonian's marketing manager and copy editor, has double the load of work — making sure promotions are advertised in The Daily Cougar plus coordinating story assignments to get them to section editors from writers on-time for deadlines. "The job entails a lot of long hours and hard work, but at the end of the year, when the yearbook comes back from the plant, it's all worth while," Chmiola said.
