Transcript Junior advertising major Diana Aderson and junior biology major Valerie Hohmann practice their defense moves at a self-defense workshop sponsored by the Inter- Fraternity Council and Houston Panhellenic Association. Photo By Pete Medrano 180 March kick •PlETRIA can VHtt With the number of sexual assault cases on the rise, students fought back as they learned how to protect themselves at a free self-defense seminar, Saturday, March 28. The workshop, sponsored by the Houston Collegiate Panhellenic Association and the Inter-Fraternity Council, was held at Garrison Gym and was open to all students. About 120 women took advantage of the hands-on seminar with the help of seventh-degree black belt instructor, Tom Fowler, owner of Champion Martial Arts Studio, who showed them self-defense tactics as if they were the ones being attacked. Students learned how to kick and punch their assailant in order to disable them, not hurt them. "I think it's important to equip women with the self-defense skills necessary to protect themselves," said Panhellenic Advisor Josey Evans. "That's why we held the workshop. It was to raise awareness of sexual assault and to help students get over their fear of what to do in case they were attacked." Sexual assault, commonly known as rape was defined by the Texas Penal Code as when a stranger or acquaintance commits sexual acts through the use of force. The UH definition also included any touching of an unwilling person's intimate parts or forcing an unwilling person to touch another's intimate parts by force, threat or intimidation. Statistics showed that rape was one of the fastest growing crimes in the country, and that was with fewer than 10 percent of the crimes reported. The FBI estimates that one out of four women and one in 12 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Acquaintance rape is the most reported assault among college students, with over 84 percent. Surveys indicated that alcohol was the deciding factor for the high percentage rate. "I think it went rather well," said HCPA president Emilie Cisneros. "I was excited to hear the positive feedback I received from the participants. They all thought Tom and his staff did an excellent job instructing the classes while making it a fun learning experience."
