Transcript Inter-fraternity members battle it out during Phi Mu's Spring Greek Feud. The event helped to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network. Photo by Patrick Sullivan Bernard "We get the chance to build unity within the Greek Community," Josey Evans The University of Houston Inter-Fraternity Council and Houston Collegiate Panhellenic Association joined forces during the second week of February for Greek Week, one of the school's oldest annual traditions. With 14 Greek organizations participating, over 1,500 cans of food were collected for Kid Care, a meals-on-wheels program that benefits the underprivileged children of the Houston Independent School District. In order to compete in Greek Week activities, two non-perishable food items had to be donated per person, per event. "Basically, the UH Greek Week is dedicated to Inter-Fraternity and Panhellenic organizations getting together and having some fun while doing some good at the same time. It's not only us, though. Greek Week is sponsored all across the nation," said IFC President Cory Herrel. The festivities began Monday Feb. 9, with a Banner contest decorating the University Center. Banners from all 14 groups were entered into the contest, and the banners from Chi Omega and Lambda Phi Epsilon were judged the winners. Nearly 300 Greeks also showed off their spirit in the spirit contest that day, in which each individual signed in at the Cougar Den, wearing their organization's letters to show-off their spirit. Tuesday, Feb. 10, Greek members had the opportunity to meet new people and see new faces at the barbecue mixer located at the Field House in the Athletic/Alumni Center. Barbecue provided by Trigg's Catering Company encouraged 250 Greeks to come out and join in the fun. "Greek Week is a great idea. We get the chance to build unity within the Greek community. Students get the chance to see that we're more than just the typical Greeks. We're all about philanthropy, community service, and we're just having good, healthy fun, supporting our school," said Panhellenic Advisor Josey Evans. Greek Week continued on Wednesday, Feb. 11, with about 30 members rallying to support the UH baseball team as they faced the Rice Owls. The day ended with the infamous Lip Sync contest, when all 14 Greek organizations got in the Valentine's mood as they bashed or promoted the contest's "Love" theme, (continued to page 161) 158 February Greek Week 159
