Transcript Bowl, snapping any chance that the Coogs had of making it back to a bowl game. And this occured before the first conference game. The game against Cincinnati proved to be the most enjoyable for the hometown fans. The Bearcats and Cougars battled through two overtimes before SebastianVillarreal booted a 37 yard field goal to win the game. UH had bounced back from the UCLA drubbing and recorded it's C-USA win of the year, 41-38. One week later UH traveled to Louisville to take on the Cardinals. For the second straight week, the Coogs turned what could have been an easy win into a very interesting ballgame. Freshman Jason McKinley made his winning pitch for C-USA Freshman of the Year by passing for 342 yards in the win over the Cards. It was the sixth straight win in a row over C-USA opponents. However, that streak was about to end also. Memphis found the Cougars waiting for them in the Liberty Bowl and took UH apart. After a first quarter field goal, UH could not score again and Memphis won 24-3. UH was laughed off of the field, but this was the first conference game for that to occur. The rest of the Cougar season played out just like the Memphis game: nothing went right. After barely losing to ECU at home, the Coogs were killed by Southern Miss and Tulane both, 33-0 and 44-10, respectively. The Memphis loss had ruled out any chance of a bowl berth, and it seems the Coogs lost their season in the same place it ended in 1996, in the Liberty Bowl. Helton's team played hard, but did not have the talent that preceded them. All in all, the team fared about as well as could be reasonably expected. "We always thought we were in there, in every game, right until the closing seconds," Helton said. Without the go for-broke-mentality, I would not know what to do."
