Transcript Gridiron Mishaps by D. Ryan Nonceaux Cougar football player Vaughn Washington kicks the ball from a teammate. Photo by Edmond Vahedi The Cougar football season was a wash as UH could not build on the bowl berth of a year before. Jason McKinley's Freshman of the Year award was the lone bright spot for a team that feel from 7-5 in 1996 to 3-8 this year. The 1997 Cougar football team was riding high after the previous year's team made it's first ever trip to the Liberty Bowl. It had been eight years since the team had been to a bowl game, and expectations were even higher for the 1997 squad. However, with a decline in talent and with a shaky start to the season, the football team had difficulty getting geared for a late season charge, and finished the year at a disappointing 3-8. Coach Kim Helton's team played hard all season and maintained that the season was not lost all the way up until the kickoff of the 44-10 thrashing Tulane put on the Coogs in the final game of the season. "We're a good team. We have had our misfortunes, but we will never let one or two or three loses get us down. We must press on and continue to fight," Helton said. The Cougars began their season with a trip into Legion Field in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to face the Alabama Crimson Tide. Although this Tide team would be the weakest for Bama in decades, one would have never known it as the Tide rolled, 42-17. Even with the first week setback, Houston was not willing to let the loss get them down - there was still a lot of season left. The Coogs then came home for two straight games in town, one at the Astrodome andl the other on campus at Robertson Stadium. In both contests, the results were less than extraordinary. UH lost to California 35-3 and then to Pittsburgh 35-24 only seven days later. UH scored first against Cal, but then watched as the Golden Bears put up 35 unanswered points in front of 37,652 Cougar fans, the largest home crowd in three seasons. Pitt capitalized on three late Cougar turnovers to crush the Cougar hopes of a win on campus. After beginning the season 0-3, Houston flew to Minneapolis to face the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. Over 36,000 fans in the Metrodome saw UH hang on and win their first game of the seaon, 45-43. The game was the most exciting of the young Cougar season, and provided the lift that Houston needed going into their game with UCLA, who had pounded UT 66-3 earlier in the season. However, that "lift" was left in Minnesota. UCLA pounded UH early and often as they hammered the Coogs 66- 10 in the Rose Kim Helton and and son Tyson stare in disbelief after the Coogs lost to the Tulane Green Wave, 44-10 to complete the miserable season.
