Transcript Sight for Sore eyes Naquanna Driver The UH College of Optometry is definitely making its mark. It is nationally recognized for its excellent optometry program and top-ranking staff. Considered one of the best optometry institutions throughout the country, UHCO is involved in several projects and is reaching new heights. "We are just coming to the end of our admissions process, where we have just integrated, for the first time, interviews of all of our applicants," Dr. Kathryn Peek, director of student affairs and admissions, said. "We have interviewed 172 of almost 400 of our applicants this year." Over 400 undergraduates and 30 graduates are enrolled at UHCO. Students participate in humanitarian missions to provide eye care to remote or neglected areos of Central America and Mexico. "We're doing our first international trips where we are able to collect eye glasses here and take them over to other countries;, Peter Cass, a second-year student, said. "We can give people in other countries used glasses at no cost." The campus University Eye Institute Other COIJntriPS " PpfPT f/KS provides eye care for more than 35,000 patients each year. These services include pediatrics, research clinics, family practice and other optical services. UHCO also has a top graduate program and provides continuing education and training for over 1,500 Southwest doctors. According to the its "Fact Sheet", the college is known for its high-ranking, diverse faculty. Its faculty is one of the largest of the 16 U.S. optometry colleges. UHCO faculty holds more P.h.D's than any other optometric institutions. They include optometrists, biomedical scientists and vision scientists. There are also public health specialists and physicians. Faculty-student relationships are very important at UHCO. Students interact closely with faculty during laboratory sessions , clinics and classrooms. Annual events, such as the "Eye Open" Golf Tournament and "Double Vision" Tennis Tournament are held to encourage these relationships. UHCO is actively involved with the Texas Optometry Careers and Opportunities Optometry student Brandon Marsh woks on Blake Thornhill, also an optometry student.
