Transcript getting respect DEMITRI CANTU "We kind of go fast and furious ...," Robert Mayes While many students were enjoying their final days of summer vacation tanning on the beach or party hopping, the 220 members of the Cougar Band were practicing their show for the first UH football game. The Cougar Band learned a new show every week for their half-time performance including music like "A Tribute to Santana," "Robin Hood" and "The Star Wars Trilogy." "We kind of go fast and furious at first, but we do make sure that the students have time to get their studies done," said Band Director Robert Mayes. "They work real hard, and are enthusiastic and spirited." Performing on the football field required dedication and rehearsal five times a week. Instead of eating lunch during the noon hour, Cougar Band members practiced every day Monday through Friday at the Alumni Athletic Facility. "It takes a lot of effort. You really need to focus, but it all ends up working out in the end," said junior graphic communications major Lisa Lockler. Cougar Band members were both music and non-music majors, and not only did the band consist of woodwinds and brass and percussion players, but also flags, baton twirlers and Band Fans. "Band Fans was a side-line role," said senior education major Matthew Cushing. "We helped to make sure that everything ran smoothly, and even though I wasn't in band anymore, it allowed me to be part of the organization." The Cougar Band also had the opportunity to travel to Memphis, Tenn. for their out- of-town game of the year. "Unfortunately, we can only go to one out-of-town game (a) year because we travel by bus, and it gets hard to travel the longer distances," Mayes said. Two events occurred this year that held importance for band members. Not only was it the band's 50th anniversary, but the Moores School of Music opened doors to its new building in September. "The new building is absolutely wonderful. We have a band hall large enough for 300 people," Mayes said. Lockler agreed, saying, "It's really neat seeing all of the attention that the band is getting these days. With the 50th anniversary dedication and the new music building, I think that the band is finally getting the respect it deserves." Members of the Cougar Band dance and play the night away as they perform at the annual Homecoming bonfire. The Cougars celebrated the 25th year of the tradition.
