Transcript The Effects of the UPS Strike UPS STRIKES UP A STORM "Not being able to purchase a textbook the first week of classes is a problem," Zoraida Chavez* On Aug. 4, United Parcel Service came to a screeching halt and deliveries across the country, including those to and from the University of Houston were affected. UPS union employees were striking because the company had switched to utilizing more part- time jobs and subcontractors instead of hiring full-time employees. Other issues included safety, benefits and wages. Due to the UPS strike, the UH Bookstore had to deal with the delay of some textbooks. "Mainly met lalized books or late orders were delayed," said Lynda Radisi, general manager of the bookstore. "We had six to seven weeks of problems. Some books got (to the store) two weeks to a month after classes started." The inconvenience did not go unnoticed by students. "Not being able to purchase a textbook the first week of classes is a problem since teachers assign readings starting the first day of instruction," said Zoraida Chavez, a sophomore University Studies student "I didn't have problems getting my books, but I know of at least two people who had a lot of catching up to do because their textbook came in late," Chavez said. Tin- strike also delayed the implementation of the new OneCard. "We had to issue temporary cards to the residents," said Jackie Mitchell, manager of the OneCard office. The OneCard was the new form of student identification designed to consolidate all student service cards into one. Set to take effect when classes began, full use with permanent cards was delayed six weeks until UPS was able to ship the cards. Even after the strike ended on Aug. 18, UPS services did not resume at full speed. "There was a back up to deal with," said Ismael Zepeda, a sophomore technology major and a UPS employee. "There was lots of backed-up orders we had to attend to, in addition to new orders. After a few weeks, things got back to normal." The strike did not just cause shipping problems, but also some monetary problems for the bookstore. "We had to use other agencies so shipping was costing us more. Also, we got double orders for some books because publishers were shipping through UPS and other agencies," Radisi said « August ^»7AaLv IS WK. 2. m m • •-•* l^^^jl 1 ^^^ B»fir^ rJB.** 4|-3(l ^tj *m»< m*m>"*mt Pi w+> im»i «n » ' '»WWl> >» .»»■ »»« i«n ■«*■■«■ >m»m M A UPS driver makes one of many stops on campus.
