Transcript UH's Students Views on Vacations Stonehenge - England Photo by Pete Medrano Juliana Coutinho Vacation time was a great opportunity for University of Houston students to relax at home, with no wornes about homework or that noisy alarm clock. And even though they were not in the classroom, they could still learn and add to their life experiences. Will Foster, senior hotel and restaurant management major , spent every summer with his grandparents in Pasadena, Calif. While there, he enjoyed his favorite cookies and lemonade made by his grandmother and riding in the mountains with his grandfather. "It's a very beautiful scenery from the mountains," Foster said. Visiting another country was another great vacation experience, even if one didn't speak the language. Psychology senior Babette Hughes went to the Middle East, where she said "many different things can happen. First of all, it is difficult to be taken seriously because one looks so different, especially when you are a really white girl who doesn't speak Arabic." Hughes said she remembered being in Jordan with another woman, entering a restaurant and finding that they were the only women there. But that wasn't all that made them uncomfortable -- they also didn't know how to order anything. Nevertheless, Hughes ended up with "a plate of fries soaked in oil and I managed to figure out the bill even though the numbers where written in the Arabic form," she said. For Silvia Mezzoni-Guzman, a graduate hotel and restaurant management major, the experience was less complicated. Last time she went on vacation, she visited Trinidad, a small Caribbean island in South America. While there, Trinidad's Carnival parties were in full swing. Mezzoni-Guzman said it was the greatest vacation she ever took. "The huge and colorful King and Queen costumes were astonishing. They were about 30 feet tall and 18 feet wide," Mezzoni-Guzman said. On the last day of the four-day holiday, everyone wore costumes and danced in the streets. "It was a wonderful time. Carnival in Trinidad is more than a simple show or party. It is the biggest show on Earth." However, students didn't need to go to a different place every vacation to have a good time. Emma Torgersen, junior radio and television major, said she went to her home country of Norway each year. "I appreciate the beauty of the country more and more every time," Torgersen said. She added that what she also loves about the country is that during summer there, it is always daylight. "You go out to a party and when you get out of the club it is still bright outside. It is so nice," Torgersen said "I appreciate the beauty of the country more and more ever time,** Emma Torgerson Amsterdam - Holland Photo by Pete Medrano 0 August Vacations 0
