Transcript SPIRIT DANCERS COUGAR DOLLS DANCE TO A UH BEAT They weren't cheerleaders, but they had just as much spirit. The Cougar Dolls were the band's drill team who performed at every half-time show, and could be found on the sidelines cheering the team on as well. "We were more dancers than cheerleaders. We had choreographers and professional dancers come and teach us new moves," said Captain Kelly Olivier. Because there were so many ladies that tried out for the Cougar Dolls, many were turned down each year. Tryouts were held every April by sponsor Diane Mayes. Unless someone was a returning doll, each person who tried out had to choreograph their own solo lasting from a minute to a minute and a half. They were judged based on kicks, jumps, dance components, and poise. Everyone, including the returning Dolls, also had to learn and perform a dance routine. "I thought they were a very good squad last year. We liked to look organized, so we practiced on our flaws before we presented it to the UH fans," said Olivier. There were 23 ladies on the squad, and each one was required to attend rigorous training for one hour on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They also practiced two hours before every performance. The Cougar Dolls could be seen at football games and men's and women's basketball games. "You had to be dedicated and love to dance. We loved perfection in our routines, and we strived to look good. That's what being a Cougar Doll was all about," said Olivier.
