Transcript COUGAR SPIRIT CHEERLEADERS CHEER UH TO VICTORY The Cougar cheerleaders were the school's pep-squad. They were the fans that never gave up, no matter what, and brought spirit to every major sporting event at UH, especially the football games. It was their job to keep the fans on the edge of their seat, no matter what the outcome may have been. "We saw when the game was not going our way, and the crowd starts to wind down. That's where we stepped in. If we had to go in the stands or use our gigantic signs, we would make at least one person cheer, and that's all we wanted," said Senior RTV major, 4-year veteran, and squad member Monica Quintero. The varsity squad consisted of four girls and four guys, all upperclassman, all veterans. They practiced everyday for an hour and worked out every other day for two hours to enhance the stunts that the UH cheerleaders were known for. "We did high pyramids, synchronized gymnastics and danced routines in our performances," said Quintero. Over 40 students tried-out for the varsity cheerleading squad, only eight and two alternates were accepted. "To be on varsity, you had to know how to do basic gymnastics, and it helped to have previous cheerleading experience," said Quintero. The cheerleaders would not only cheer at UH sporting events, but they also attended state and national competitions yearly. "We practiced very hard for nationals, which was every other year. We had to compete against thousands of universities in the nation, but the experience was unforgettable. We placed 10th in the national competition," said Quintero. They were the loudest most supportive fans at UH. You could always find them on the sidelines cheering the Cougars to victory and never losing hope. "We would cheer for our school until they turned the lights off. It's not just our job, it's our loyalty to UH," said Quintero.
