Transcript SOUND AND SPIRIT COUGAR BAND MARCHES TO THE SPIRIT OF UH The Cougar Band had a great opportunity to show UH fans what they were really made of, and because the football games were played on campus , the fan turnout was higher than ever. "Home games gave us an incentive to rehearse longer, play louder and look better in our drills," said Junior music major, and drum major Elizabeth Sorrells. Half-time was exciting, game after game, as the band added new routines to enhance crowd participation. " We hke to play the school fight song when we are coming off the field, and the 'Hay' Song' once we get on the sidelines," said Sorrells. "We want to pump the crowd so the football team can see how supportive we are of them." The band consisted of 17 S members and 3 0 auxiliaries. There were chosen through try-outs held during the summer before the fall academic year. " About 120 students tryout each summer, some of them are returning veterans, and some freshman, but not everyone makes the marching band," said Junior music major and drum major Aaron Smith. Most students in the marching band attended school through scholarships which were awarded by the music school. Students had to keep a 2.33 GPA, and maintain as an active member of the marching band throughout their college career. The band organization consisted of several other bands outside of marching band including jazz band, stage band, concert and symphonic band. They attended UIL competition and sent students to all parts of the US to perform as part of different bands and orchestras. Aside from their heart-pounding performances at the football games, the Cougar Band were also seen at area parades, fund-raisers, pep rallies, and various UH sporting events. Freshman Music major Gabriel Flores practices with his section before a UH home game. Junior music major Judson Merritt performs a trumpet solo during a half-time performance. Junior music major Chris Foster takes a breather. Aaron Brown Aaron is a Senior Music major, and drum major of the Cougar band. He is a 4- year veteran of the band, and is a 2-nd year drum major. " It's great to become part of an organization. You don't come to school, sit down and go home. You want to become more involved." -Aaron Brown 212« ORGANIZATIONS I COUGAR BAND COUGAR BAND | ORGANIZATIONS • 2 1 3
