Transcript Clinton Impeachment The Nation Gets Battle of a After a year of long-drawn out media coverage of the White House scandal, the House of Representatives voted to impeach President William Jefferson Clinton on charges of perjury and obstructing justice. But only one month later, the Senate couldn't muster up the two- thirds vote needed to remove him from office. When the Senate voted 55-45 against the charge of perjury, the president was in the exercise room for his daily routine. When the Senate voted 50-50 against the charge of obstruction of justice, the president was preparing for his post-acquittal remarks. Clinton spoke to the nation for only two minutes about his acquittal. "I am humbled and very grateful for the support and the prayers I have received from millions of Americans over this past year, said Clinton. Ready for the Lifetime "I am humbled and very grateful for the support and the prayers I have received from millions of Americans over this past year," -President Bill Clinton "Now I ask all Americans, and I hope all • ■ Americans, here in Washington and throughout our land, will rededicate ourselves to the work • of serving our nation and building our a future together." According to polls, Americans were tired of hearing about Clinton's sexual infidelity with * a young White House intern, • and wanted the trial not to occur. Yet Americans continued to watch, from the first report of the scandal to Clinton's finger- * wagging denial and the five-week Senate trial. The president emerged i from the trial with a < scandal-stained legacy and a « reputation for lying, offset only „ by high job-approval ratings. Clinton is forever paired with Andrew Johnson as the nation's only impeached Presidents. 1 54* WORLD NEWS
