Transcript The Next Generation ••••••••••••••••••*•••••••••••••••! George Bush Junior Reshapes Texas Politics While Considering A Run For The White House While Democrats swept the November elections throughout the country, Texas again went against the grain. The mostly-Republican state pushed the few Democrats in office out. George W. Bush, as predicted, won re-election as governor, defeating his opponent Gary Mauro by a landslide. Bush's next big move was to decide whether or not to run for president in the year 2000, , though he was already pegged as the Republican front-runner. Bush said he wanted to take time over the Christmas holidays to discuss seeking the presidential nomination with his wife, Laura, and twin 16- year-old daughters before he made a decision. Bush said he is most concerned about the imposition that would be put on his family if he ran, and not the scrutiny of his "irresponsible youth." Bush, 52, said he quit drinking in the morning after his 40th birthday party, when he woke up with a killer hangover and a disapproving wife. He also had a lively social life while single, and was arrested while at Yale for swiping a Christmas wreath. There has been talk that Bush got into Yale not because of his smarts, but because of his family name. His grandfather, Prescott Bush, was a U.S. senator from 195 2 to 1964. Bush enrolled in Yale in 1964. Also, during his father's presidential re-election campaign in 1992, the media took a closer look at the business dealings of the younger Bush. The Los Angeles Times reported that in January 1990, a Dallas- based corporation won an exclusive contract to drill oil in the small Persian Gulf island nation of Bahrain, even though the company had no offshore oil-drilling experience. Critics argues that the company won the oil rights because then-oilman George W. Bush was a board member and paid consultant for the company, and Bahrain wanted to be in good favors with President Bush. But until Bush sends his affirmative signal if he's running for president, he is focusing on the term at hand. Supporters rallied to George Bush as he was the first Republican Governor elected to consecutive terms and given credit for the Republican sweep of the top state offices. 138« WORLD NEWS George Bush
