Transcript timeline U.S. District Judge Susan Webber Wright, who threw the Paula Jones case out of court in April, is unsealed most of the depositions and documents from the civil trial. • The Texas Hill Country and much of southeast Texas was hit by unrelenting rains. The flooding caused the death of 1*4 people and forced evacuations from hundreds of homes. • Congress voted to proceed with impeachment hearings about the Monica Lewinsky and Clinton scandal. President Clinton held extensive talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders at the Wye Plantation resort outside Washington. For five days, Benjamin Netanyahu and Yasser Arafat were isolated to try to hammer out an agreement that would end 19 months of deadlock in peace moves. The idea behind the isolation of the two sides was to instill an atmosphere of cordiality and relaxation that would facilitate an agreement. The talks are being held under a virtual news blackout imposed by the administration on the theory that secrecy is conducive to compromise. According to diplomatic sources, Netanyahu and Arafat exchanged allegations that suggest mistrust between the two leaders persist. The Palestinians have accepted neither an Israeli demand that terrorism suspects be extradited to Israel for trial nor an American compromise that they bet tried by Palestinian courts. But they were willing to take steps to enhance security in Ramallah. Netanyahu has agreed to relinquish a further 13 percent of the West Bank, with 3 percent designated as a nature preserve, but has declared there will be no agreement unless Arafat takes concrete steps to curb terrorism. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is backing Israel in its call for improved security and the uprooting of terrorist cells on territory already under the control of Arafat's Palestinian Authority. Arafat's position is that peace itself will bring better security and that he is already making a 100 percent effort to combat violence against Israelis. c to set took October "13 1
