Transcript Baseball Grand Slam This season will go down as one of the greatest in the annals of Cougar history as Rayner Noble's 1999 squad won the school's first regular- season conference title since 1961 and hosted a regional for the first time in the history of the University. With a 40-23 record, the Cougars accomplished much this season in route to a final top-2 5 ranking for the first time in almost 30 years. Surprise standouts Kyle Crowell, who went 1 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA, and J.P. Woodward, who finished his first season on Cullen with a .381 batting average and 18 home runs, were instrumental in the success of the team. With only three seniors and one underclassmen leaving after the MLB Draft, the Cougars will be in great shape entering the 2000 season. The first part of the season was a roller- coaster for Houston as the team won most of the games it should and some of those it should not. The final game the UH-hosted Adam's Mark Invitational ended up being the longest game in collegiate history as Baylor finally beat Houston 8- 2 in 22 innings. The game was in the midst of a streak in which the Cougars went into extra innings in four of six contests. A 12-9 victory in 12 innings at Disch-Falk in Austin over Texas was capped by a three-run home run by shortstop Aaron Melebeck to ice the win. After sweeping three from national powerhouse Ohio State at Cougar Field, UH began it's conference season in mid-March by winning it's first five C-USA games over Louisville and UNC- Charlotte. The winning pace continued until a trip to New Orleans in the middle of April to face Tulane halted all of the Cougar momentum. UH lost the first two games of the series before salvaging the final game of the series. Friday night's 12-4 loss would be the last time that sophomore Kyle Crowell would lose in the season. With Tulane now leading the conference and everyone else seeming to be competing for second place, the Coogs kept moving ahead, battling in every game. The Sunday win at Tulane Barry Watson Coach Nobles learn finished the season wtth a 40 - 23 record. This gave the cougars there first conference title since 1961 98. SPORTS Grand Slam • 99
