Transcript Joe Curl New Beginnings Joe Curl likes challenges. He constantly reminds all that come into contact with him that hard work, dedication and loyalty are the basis for a stable and successful life. And, according to Curl, they are essential to elevating the Lady Cougar basketball program to the proverbial "next level." Curl took the Lady Cougar head coaching position with these objectives in mind, even though he knew exactly what would be in store during his freshman campaign with UH. "There are some major challenges ahead for us. We had a bad year, but we didn't honestly expect to contend. But I am extremely excited about those challenges. They lie in literally Above: New Lady Cougar head coach Joe Curl instructs sophomore ShaRonda Lasseter. Right: During the home game against Memphis, Curl instructs his entire staff during a timeout. The Cougars went on to lose the game, 94-69. BY D. RYAN MONCEAUX every phase of our program," Curl said. The first major hurdle Curl and his program faced was the 1998-99 season. With a tougher schedule than in years'-past, the team played a differing group of programs, six of which were ranked in the Top 25 during the season. "I don't look at the season as a 26-game schedule, but more as one game at a time. Yeah, as a human you look at the won-loss record at the end of the season, but thank God you only play them one at a time." Some of the more prolific games on the women's schedule this season included a win against Texas on November 18, a 44-point blowout by LSU in Baton Rouge and a game at fabled Allen Field House against the Kansas Jayhawks. "And it gets tougher," Curl quickly points out. "We play at Louisiana Tech next season, and they went to the Final Four this year. We'll also make a trip to national powerhouse Georgia." Another one of Coach Curl's priorities is 90- SPORTS Above: Angela Curl, Joe's oldest daughter, was a starter for the Lady Cougars in her freshman year. 'AC averaged 13 points per game on the year. Left: Curl stalks the sidelines, always a tough customer for C-USA referees. building his program into a national power. To do that, he feels that it is essential to face the tougher opponents each and every year. Alongside the schedule, working hard and recruiting better athletes are Curl's keys to turning around the women's program, which suffered a 5-22 record in his first season. "We're trying to bring in better athletes, and we're recruiting against the best teams in the nation. We're battling the Texases, Texas Techs and LSU's of the world. Our goal is to bring in the best talent in the nation. "Some people say 'Why are you trying to get the best? You're just Houston.' Well, we say 'Why not?' If anyone gets the best talent, why can't it be us?" New Beginnings 91
