Transcript Basketball three games before losing the final four games of the season. In Birmingham, Alabama, Coach Drexler coached his last game of his first season. While the Cougars were able to keep up with UNC Charlotte in the first half, their lack of inside depth and scoring caused them to succumb to a much more athletic and experienced team. The Cougars played inspired ball in the first half, but wound up losing the war with UNC Charlotte 75-51 at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center. The Cougars were outscored 44-25 in the second half and were not able to score for several long stretches. "It was just too much for us to handle tonight," Drexler said. "We came out rather flat, and we had a couple of guys who had injuries and could not show what we had." Despite the record, the team made great strides during the season. For the first time in years, tickets to home games were a hot commodity, and several local businesses sold out the newly added luxury boxes. No one expected miracles during Drexler's first year, and they were not disappointed. The team was 6-6 at home, 3-10 on the road, and won five conference games. After the UNC game, Clyde told the press and mob of fans seeking his autograph "I thought we did the best we could with what we had, and I am proud to be their coach." Throughout the Spring, Drexler and his coaching team managed to sign several excellent recruits for the next season, including the top players in Texas and Nebraska. Despite the unsuccessful season, optimism remained high that the Cougars would once again become a team to be reckoned with. 68- SPORTS Drexler's first season as Head Coach was a tough transition year with a final record of 10-17.
