Transcript Basketball A Slow Start The return of Clyde Drexler to UH was perhaps the only good news of the 1998-1999 men's basketball season. The team was left nearly in ruins by former Head Coach Alvin Brooks, which left Clyde and the new coaching staff a large hole to dig themselves out of. After setting the record for games lost in a single season last year, the team finished the season with 17 losses-three better than the previous year. The season opened to a nearly full house at Hofheinz Pavilion-the largest attendance the team had drawn in years-and played an exciting game against UT. The Cougars defeated the Longhorns 71-69 with Gee Gervin Jr. scoring 25 points. "It was a great effort from start to finish, and we executed very well. We played a good team and we really played well as a team and we stuck to our game plan," said Drexler. "It was a wonderful crowd tonight, and it was really great." After two embarrassing losses to Rice and Sam Houston State, the Cougars went on to defeat the I.URU.I. Jaguars and then took on LSU. With a final score of 67-55, it was the first time in a year that the Cougars had won back-to-back games. Gervin and Kenny Younger, UH's two most consistent players, both figured prominently in the win. With less than five minutes to play, Gervin and Younger took over. The pivotal play took place with 3:49 to play as Gervin found a streaking Younger for a monster dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. The Cougars played the next six games on the road losing all but one close match to Sacramento State. The win was one of only three games the team would see on the road. Returning home, the Cougars defeated Southern Mississippi 64-57, and then lost six back- to-back games with a close exception of the Memphis Tigers. The Cougars defeated Memphis at home 83-81, in a battle that showcased Younger. "Kenny Younger was just incredible on both ends of the court," UH head coach Clyde Drexler said. "He played the whole game. I don't think he got any subs, but he's just a warrior, and today was indicative of the type of player that he is." The Cougars faced the Tigers in Memphis again and won by one point 79-78. The second defeat of Memphis saw the beginning of Cougars longest winning streak of 6 6 « SPORTS A Slow Start
