Transcript BASICALLY COOGIE by Demi Jessett He's a behind-the-scenes kind of guy. Shy. Quiet. One who blushes at even the smallest compliment. He observes every one of us. Every student. Every faculty member. Every squirrel. UH news and events. World news and events. He watches because he's taking us in. Into his mind and out through his cartoons. For cartoonist, John Palmidy, this is just another day in the life of "Coogie". Palmidy,The Daily Cougar's editorial and strip cartoonist, began his career at the Pasadena Citizen in 1988, where he not only drew editorial cartoons, but also wrote an editorial column ~ every week for over two years. In October, 1994, Palmidy joined The Daily Cougar as part of its editorial cartoon staff. I draw because I enjoy drawing. The only time that it seems like work is when there's a 10 minute deadline and I'm starting with a blank sheet of paper," said Palamidy. Not only is John Palamidy one of UH's most popular cartoonists, but he also holds a number of other jobs including the lead plumber position in the Physical Plant, where he has been at for over 10 years. He also teaches other aspiring cartoonists as a part of the Leisure Learning program six times a year. I've met a number of aspiring cartoonists who I've enjoyed giving some words of wisdom," said Palamidy. "I think two of the most talented cartoonists are Aaron Netherly and David McGuire, who shows the most current promise." Palamidy has a number of other cartoon projects in the works besides "Coogie." As part of his dream, Palamidy has been working on being a syndicated cartoonist for the past five or six years and has recendy published his own book, Basically Coogie, a compilation of his favorite UH memories and cartoons available at both UH bookstores. "I wish I could spend mire time drawing, but the rigors of daily work many times keep me from it," said Palamidy. "I'm never satisfied with my art work. Be it the time spent or technique involved that might be improved." As far as goals and dreams of the artist that brought "Coogie" to life, John Palamidy wants to eventually be a syndicated cartoonist, buy a new truck and "draw the perfect strip." To put it in Palamidy's words, "cartooning is just a God-given gift that I'm taking advantage of."
