Transcript Throughout the dorms, freshmen helped Mom and Dad unload the U-Haul before being hugged and embarrassed saying good-bye. Left to adjust to a cramped room and suitemates. the freshmen prepared for tomorrow-the first day of college. To many, Cougar Craze sounded fun and with the room slowly closing in, they met the RA and head over to the Alumni building. Cougar Craze, which began in August, 1997, was the inspiration of the University of Houston Alumni Association. After noticing a lack of pride among students, the organization put forth an effort to "pass down to the freshmen" their "sense of tradition," says Nick Brines, Assistant Director of Programming for the association and one of the directors of the event. "We wanted to bond the freshman class together," explains Sarah Martin, who was the Cougar Craze Coordinator. "Come as students, leave as a class," proclaims the invitation to Cougar Craze that was sent to every incoming freshman. The association hoped that this pep rally would T. heir first official day as Cougars, freshmen enjoy free burgers and hot dogs on the Alumni Building patio. Snow cones were also offered to those who attended, as well as Cougar Craze t-shlrts. encourage the freshman to have fun on campus and to realize that there is more to UH than "just going to class," says Brines. The event was sponsored by the Alumni Association and aided by donations from Pepsi- Cola and Houston Cellular and Mountain Dew. Dominique Sachse of Channel 2 News, the Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuck, and President Arthur Smith all came to welcome the freshmen. The cheerleaders, the Cougar Band, and the Frontiersmen came out and taught the freshman the fight song and several of the most popular cheers. After that was a dance which "got the freshmen to interact with one another," says Martin. With the semester beginning the next day Brines says, "organizers helped to put the nervous freshmen at ease," by answering a multitude of questions. Representatives from various clubs on campus also set up booths. There was a "full range of activities," says Brines. Organizers point to the doubled attendance ratings from last year as proof of the event's success. by: Elizabeth Marie Combs Adorned in spirit colors, Cougar Craze team members display their shirts. The Fight Song was conveniently on the back for the new Freshmen to learn and sing along with the Cougar Band and cheerleaders. 24 • CAMPUS LIFE I Outlook Booths were set up and things were passed out by many organizations to give the freshmen a chance to ask questions and get Involved on campus.
