Transcript BILL BUTLER Tackle FRANK HURTTE Guard Leo Van Haverbeke snags a Buff aerial. UH SQUEEZES PAST WEST TEXAS, 14-13 HOUSTON, Oct. 15—The UH slammed over two touchdowns in nine minutes here today, then held on grimly to scratch out a L4-13 win over the rampaging Buffaloes from West Texas State. The staunch Cougar line denied three WTS thrusts, all from the UH one-yard line. A slick quarterback, Gene Mayfield, baffled the Cougars most of the game. Mayfield would tighten up the line with a pair of slams at the middle, then pass until the UH forwards were spread, and the backs were dizzy. But when the Buffs neared the double stripe, the Red and White front wall, drawing inspiration from rugged Leo Van Haverbeke, rose up to deny the bid. It was an obvious case of overconfidence on the Cougars' part. But outstanding defensive play by Van Haverbeke. Bill Butler, San ford Carr, Frank Hurtte, and Ed Staggs, made up in large part for the overconfidence and a weak pass defense. Baker lugs the ball through West Texas defenders.
