Scott Sponsor The Forensic Society was first formed at the University of Houston in 1947, but did not begin active inter-collegiate Competition until 1949 when Dr. Otis M. Walter became Chairman of the Department of Speech and varsity debate coach. From the years 1949 through 1953, Houston debaters compiled an outstanding record. They were twice invited to the National Invitational Tournament at West Point, New York. This year the University debaters compiled an especially outstanding record. Bill Kilgarlin and Bernie Burrus were officially declared the No. 1 debate team in the Southwest and were invited to attend the National Tournament. The University also had one of the outstanding Freshman teams in the area. Don Alford and Charles Ledbetter won a first and two seconds in major tournament competition. This year Robert L. Scott became debate coach at the University. 415
