Transcript GOING UP to take one off the backboard, Louis Brown gets by Brooke Army Medical Center's defense. A moment later, Brown sunk a crip shot to help the Cougars win the game, 53-49. COUGARS START SLOW, THEN SPEED UP A hot-and-cold Cougar basketball team started their 1949 cage campaign with five straight losses before breaking into the win column against the Loyola Wolf- pack. In a real heart-breaker, the Red and White dropped their opener with Shur-Start Battery, 50-51. The Cougars were holding a 50-45 advantage over Shur-Start with two minutes left in the game when the Battery crew got hot. Journeying to Shreveport, La., the Cougar quint tangled with a red hot Centenary Gentlemen five and came off second best, 39-46. Two tussles with the Chiefs of Oklahoma City university wound up the Cougar road trip. The Okies proved too much for the Cat cagers and took both games, 50-44 and 46-37. Home again after a disastrous road trip, ihe Cougars again met the Centenary Gents, this time on local ground. The results were the same, the Louisiana quint topping the locals, 53-46. But the Gents had a tussle on their hands with the lead changing hands nine times in the last half before the Cougars conceded defeat. Then the Cougars got hot. A previously-undefeated Loyola of the South Wolfpack came to Houston from New Orleans. They went home with two losses to their credit. Led by L. 6. Hendrix. a revitalized Cougar quintet ignored Loyola's impressive record and blasted the Wolfpack, 58-45 and 44-43. UNDER THE BASKET, Gil Luton chalks up two points against the Sam Houston Bearkats. In overtime play, the Bearkats took the thriller, 66-64.
