Every Wednesday and Saturday, participants join at the UC Underground World Affairs Lounge to practice the art of karate. Each semester there are approximately 20 club members. The club is a way for UH students, faculty, staff and alumni to remain physically active, relieve stress, make new friends, and better themselves through competition. Club members have competed and taken home medals in local, state, regional, national, and international karate tournaments. UH Alumnus, Eldar Baghirov, MS in Geology, earned 9 gold medals last year at the local and national level — including the USA-National Karate Foundation (NKF) Championship and Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation USA (SKIF-USA). Pre-Med senior, Jennifer Oteri, won the USA-NKF National Karate Champion in North Carolina in 2005 and last year was the champion of the Texas USA-NKF Karate Championship. Another UH Alumnus, Mimi Hoang, has also won various Texas karate championships; she is now graduating with a J.D. degree. The Shotokan Karate-Do Club is instructed by Sensei Deddy Mansyur — 2007 SKIF Pan American Karate Champion, 2-Time USA-NKF National Champion, 6-Time All South Japan Karate Association Regional Champion, and 15-Time State of Texas Karate Champion.
