Transcript CLIMBING i TO THE TOP Record-setting quarterback Case UH football team to Associated By Phillipe Craig WHILETHE2009UH football team fell short of accomplishing its preseason goal of winning the Conference USA championship, it did succeed in reestablishing the Cougars' place on the national landscape and won ower a new generation of fans along the way. Led by second-year head coach Kevin Sumlin, record-setting junior quarterback Case Keenum and an array of potent weapons across the board, UH cracked the APTop 25 for the first time since 1991 and spent the majority of the season there, climbing as high as No. 12. Throughout their roller-coaster ride in 2009, the Cougars had one constant: a willingness to fight until the final whistle. That resolve would provide fans with several late-game heroics and memories to last a lifetime. Coming off of their first bowl victory in 28 years, the Cougars entered 2009 looking to build on that success and test the limits of their high-powered offense. Week 1 gave fans an early glimpse of what was in store, as UH cruised to a 55-7 victory over Northwestern State behind 28 first-quarter points at Robertson Stadium. Keenum threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns, the first of several standout performances that elevated him into the HeismanTrophy discussion and the UH record books. Keenum would finish the season with a school-record 5,671 yards and 44 touchdowns. The competition would get considerably stiffer the following week, as the Cougars traveled to Stillwater, Okla., to take on the then-No. 5 Oklahoma State Cowboys, who had throttled UH 56-37 the previous season.
