Transcript The Intramural Department at the University of Houston is one of the best in the nation according to Ron Harrison, Editor and Publisher of Athletic Director and Coach periodicals. Some of the questions that interest Harrison most were what made the program so successful and how interest and patricipation were maintained when such a large percentage of the student body were commuters. Unlike many universities, the average age of the students at UH is 26 and many are married and settled into demanding lives. Nevertheless, the program is successful because of student involvement. An average enrollment at UH is 33,UUU. Approximately 9,000 to 11,000 students participate in intramural sports. The students are the governing bodies of the intramural program. They head the advisory board, and are elected from three divisions: fraternity, independent and professional school. The board develops the rules and regulations for play. The sportman board, also composed of students, makes recommendations to the intramural director for action to be taken against a team or individual. The UH Intramural Department is highly rated and the key to its success is student involvement. — Vickey Robinson o C O 6 T3 W 264 265
