Transcript Guy Lewis wins number 5 The 1982-83 edition of Cougar' roundball debuted with high hopes on November 26. Houston was ranked as high as two in various national polls and they promptly showed that they deserved it in the third annual Kettle Classic, rolling up 210 points in two games as they swept past Arizona and Lamar. Larry Micheaux, with 48 points and 26 rebounds in two games was named Tournament MVP. Clyde Drexler and Akeem Olajuwon were named to the all-tourney team. The Coogs showed off a new style of play in their first two games. Gone was the outside shooting offense centered on shooting guard Rob Williams and in its place was a power game centered on the four big men; Olajuwon, Micheaux, Drexler and Michael Young. Houston saw the stall for the first time in their third game as they put down a stubborn Mississippi State team 74-65. A win over Biscayne in Florida pushed the Coogs into the UPI top ten for the first time as Clyde Drexler scored his fourth straight 20 point game. UH blew past Auburn with a one game return to the outside shot. Next stop was Syracuse in the Carrier dome. With Akeem Olajuwon hobbled by a twisting ankle and Larry Micheaux suffering from back spasms, the Coogs wasted a magnificent effort by Clyde Drexler and lost for the first time in 14 regular season games. UH next traveled to Tokyo, Japan, where they were embarrassed by a Ralph Sampson-less Virginia team. Akeem Olajuwon turned in the dominant performance of the regular season, scoring 30 points, hauling down 18 rebounds and blocking 8 shots as the Coogs saved face bv demolishing Utah. Houston completed the longest road trip in history with a scary 93-92 win over Pepperdine. Clyde Drexler fed Micheal Young for the winning three point play. Home in the friendly confines of Hofheinz the Cougars blew past Pacific by 54 points with five players in double figures. Two games into the conference season the Coogs almost found themselves knocked out of the top 20 until Akeem Olajuwon blocked a shot with 5 seconds to go and salvaged a sloppy 79-78 win over USL UH finished non-conference play 9-2, not far from 1981-82's mark of 9-1, but the test of conference play still lay ahead.
