Transcript 'Gandhi' An interdisciplinary, intercollegiate symposium on Mahat- ma Gandhi was held at UH Central Campus Wednesday, March 23 through March 25. Twenty speakers from various backgrounds presented their impressions in short talks about the phenomena of the man and about director Richard Atten- borough's film Gandhi. Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869- 1948), a militant pacifist, was recognized among his people as a "great soul" or Mahatma in Hindi. His controversial roles in the movement toward Indian independence, ecumenical religious establishments, and human dignity for "third world" peoples continue to inspire world intere and debate. Clockwise from below: Discussions with Professor Loyd Swenson kept going in the hallways even after the symposium closed. Professors Asit Sen, political science, TSU; Jeffery Sammons, history, UH/CC; and George Lipsitz, humanities, UH/CLC wait for their turns at the podium. Kenneth Keulman, front, a junior civil technology major, takes in the commentary. From the movie, Gandhi, Ben Kingsley portrays the Indian leader with Ian Cahrleson as his missionary friend, Charlie Andrews. Dr. John Ettling, interim director, Honors Program, UH/CC, answers questions at the ending session. 103
