Transcript Communicating at the top School of Communications moving up in th world Recent surveys rank UH School of Communication faculty above those of Penn State, the UNiversity of California at Berkeley and Columbia University. The surveys, two ap- pearing in Journalism Quarterly (JQ) and one in the Bulletin of the Asso- ciation for Communication Administration (BACA), rate schools according to the number of scholarly articles penned by their professors, said Raymond Fielding, director of the School of Communication. "We are doing very well," Fielding said. "We are on a roll upward." One JQ article ranks UH advertising professors - from both the School of Communication and the College of Business Ad- ministration - 10th out of the nation's top 20 schools. UH faculty topped professors from Texas A&M University, Southern Methodist University, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Southern California and Penn State. Top-ranked University of Texas at Austin was the only other Texas university men- tioned in the survey. According to the article, this is the first time UH, A&M, SMU have ranked in the top 20, taking over slots previously held by Columbia, Harvard, Stan- ford, Purdue and Temple universities, which were not ranked in the top 20. The BACA study, publ- lished in August 1988, lists UH speech communi- cation faculty as 15th in the nation among pro- grams that offer only bachelor's and master's degrees, Fielding said. In speec communica- tions, UH professors ranked higher than those of the University of Illi- noise, the University of Al- abama, Southwest Texas State University, and New York State University, Fielding said. The second JQ study ranks UH mass communi- cation faculty - RTV, film and journalism pro- fessors - 25th out of 210 universities in the United States. Of Texas universities only UT, which ranked 6th, made a better show- ing than UH in this cat- egory. Texas A&M and Texas Tech failed to make the top thirty, and the sur- vey mentioned no other Texas universities. > Mi- chael A.
