Transcript Smith When it was learned forward Craig Upchurch would miss the entire 1990-91 basketball campaign because of a back injury, the outlook on the season was not one of optimism. Head Coach Pat Foster needed to fill his vacant forward position, Derrick Smith was part of the solution. The 6-foot, 200 pound sophomore came through with flying colors in a platoon role with forward Roger Fernandes/ Smith played in all 22 games and started on six occasions. He averaged 12.2 points and five rebounds in 25 minutes of play, and had the second highest field goal among starters. Smith's presence added a more physical deminsion to the game on both sides of the court. He drove to the basket with authority, rattles the rim on a slam dunk and can hit with consistency from the outside. On defense he showed signs of becoming an intimidating shot blocker. Smith said he'd like to pursue a professional basketball career, but was realistic about his chances. He did not doubt his ability, but knows that "everybody's trying to do that" and there's only room for a handful.-Mike Rosen Derrick Smith rebounds a shot against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
