Transcript Victorious over Rice The swim team scored a surprisingly large 182-116 victory over the Rice Owls in the first dual meet of the season. In front of a noisy crowd at Melcher Natatorium, the Cougars accomplished a rare feat by winning all but one of the 16 events of the meet. UH Head Coach Philip Hansel admitted he was "quite surprised" with the size of his team's victory. Only three weeks prior, the two teams tied for fifth in the Southwest Conference Relay meet in College Station. "Rice has more depth than we do," Hansel said. "I expected them to give us a much harder time." Freshman Lise Hansen and sophomore Michelle Smith won three events each for the Cougars. Smith, who was preparing to represent Ireland at the World Championship in Australia, took the 1,000 freestyle, the 200 butterfly and the 200 backstroke. Hansen added the 100 backstroke, the 500 freestyle and the 200 individual medley. UH took both first and second place in only three events. Juniors Sigrid Niehaus and Shelia Reeves swept the 200 backstroke, while divers Linda Pesek and Hanneke Faber dominated both springboard events. "We looked 100 percent better than a few weeks ago at the relay meet," UH Diving Coach Jane Figueredo said. "I think we are right where we need to be at this point in the season." Other victories came from junior Patty Kohlmann and senior Tiitta Latosuo. Kohlmann won the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly, even though she was swimming with a serious shoulder injury. Latosuo took the 100- and 200-yard freestyle. -J.W.
