Photo by Tony Bullard. 304 Sports Tough Breaks Throughout the season, the Lady Coogs had close calls with some of the biggest teams in NCAA women's basketball. The Arkansas LadyBacks were the First place team in the conference. In the last meeting between the two teams the Lady Cougars put up one of their hardest fights, but were able to do no more than tie the score. The LadyBacks squeaked by the Lady Cougars, winning by two. Just ten days later, the second place University of Texas Lady Longhorns came to Hofheinz. tn the 43rd meeting between the two teams, the Lady Cougars hoped to come closer than they did last year when they lost by three points. It was a valiant effort, but once again, the Lady Cougars lost to UT, this time by four points. Houston did takd the lead briefly in the second half and held the Lady Longhorns from scoring a field goal for five minutes at the end of the game. But a 28.6 first-half field goal percentage brought the Lady Coogs short for the 43rd time in a row. The Lady Coogs traveled to Lubbock Feb. 19 to meet the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Down by only one at the half, they kept up with the third place Red Raiders until the last nine minutes when the Red Raiders just ran away with it. Junior LaShawn Johnson was named Player of the Week after her career high 25 point performance in the 75-68 win over Texas A&M. She led Houston in shooting, averaging 14.1 points in an average of 28 minutes per game. Johnson also leads the team with an 80 percent free- throw average. She was ranked ninth in the conference in her shooting and 10th in steals. Senior Arlene Brown left a great trail of achievements. She led the team in steals and assists and was third on the team in shooting at 11.6. She scored her 1000th point this year. On Houston's all-time lists, Brown ranked second with 414 assists, fifth with 190 steals and seventh with 441 rebounds. Junior Darla Simpson was second in the SWC in blocked shots with 68 this season and 189 career, just behind the school record of 190. She was also ranked fourth in rebounding at 233 total, at an average of 8.6 per game. -Ken Steinhauer LaSonya Conley and the rest of the Lady Cougars kept up a fast pace to run past the Aggies 75- 68 at Hoffeinz Paviliion after already having beaten them earlier in the season at College Station.
