Transcript Much to the dismay of the California-Berkley team, Darrell Mickens' athletic ability and hustle allowed him to save the ball under the California basket and keep the Cougars on the attack. Photo by Tony Bullard. Derrick Smith made his presence known against Claifornia, coming off the bench to provide 25 points. He demostrated why he was callled EU (extra ups) when he took this rebound straight up and in over a helpless California defense. Although they compiled a record of 18-11, the round- baller's season ended with a tough loss to the PAC 10's Stanford Cardinals at Stanford in the National Invitational Tournament in March. This tough loss was preceded by two late season defeats in the Metroplex, one a controversial loss to Texas Christian Hornedfrogs at Fort Worth and the other coming at the hands of the Mustangs of Southern Methodist in the first round of the Southwest Conference Tournament in Dallas. These heartbreakers kept the Cougars from returning to the NCAA tournament again in 1991 after making it to the tournament for the first time in three years last season. One of the big season highlights was when Head Coach Pat Foster's Cougars were able to pull off the upset of conference powerhouse Texas for the fourth time in two seasons. The Cougars enjoyed that kind of success at Hofheinz pavilion all season long, losing at home only to the Arkansas Razorbacks. Led by the solid play of senior guard Byron Smith and senior center Alvaro Teheran as well as the unexpectedly strong performance of newcomer Derrick Smith, who sat out last season the Coogs were able to overcome the losses of 1989-90 All-SWC selections Craig Upchurch to injury and Carl I In rera to the pro's. The regular season 18-9 mark was enough to lead the Cougars to third in the SWC behind the Longhorns and departing Arkansas. With the return of forward Craig Upchurch the Cougars looked to challenge Texas for the conference title in the 1991-92 season. Returning starters Derrick Smith and Derrick Daniels as well as sharpshooter Tyrone Evans and newcomer Craig Lillie should form the nucleus for a strong team of the future.-Ken Steinhauer Steady as a rock, Byron Smith took aim to score two of his team-leading 29 points during the defeat of the University of California at Berkley.
