Photo by Sandy Newcomb. Brutality 4'Rugby is not a social disease." Though the statement was made partly in jest, the sticker on the side of Todd Kettel- camp's red truck was perhaps an indication of the rugby team's message for 1990-91. For almost a decade, fans and players alike had been trying to create popularity for a sport that is almost a century old. Though rugby predates football, the game hadn't gained popularity at UH or other campuses across the nation. Students here wanted to change all that. They had a fresh start with new players, new drive and new ambition along with an unprecedented goal to attract fans and players. But Kettelcamp and his teammates had to contend with a lack of knowledge about the sport and its history on campus. "Rugby is amateur, volunteer sport at its best," Kettelcamp, the team captain said. Scott Pankonan organized the new team with teammates Greg Switzer and George James. The three players said the new team was, by their estimation, better disciplined and it had excellent prospects for a winning season. The players said the team also took a new approach to winning. With drive and ambition not present in the old team the players worked together as a unit. - Courtesy Daily Cougar Rugby 297
