Transcript Over The Top The Lady Cougar volleyball team cruised to new heights as they won the Women's Invitational Volleyball Championship. The tournament is considered to be volleyball's equivalent to basketball's National Invitational Tournament (NIT). The Lady Coogs defeated Ca- lifornia State University- Northridge in four games: 15-4, 15-12, 6-15, 15-6 to claim the championship trophy. "We had an outstanding tournament. It was the best volleyball we played all year. Our defense was so good the whole tournament, we were almost perfect. It was scary," claimed Head Coach Bill Walton. The Lady Cougars knocked off Tennessee, Eastern Michigan, Hofstra, Colorado and Memphis State University before advancing to the championship against CSUN. "We were physically and mentally ready, and we played togeth er and consistently throughout the whole tournament," Assistant Coach Yong Guo said of the team's performance. The Lady Coogs finished the regular season 18-15, third in the t conference, but with the postseason victories they ended their season 24-15, the second best record for Head Coach Bill Walton since taking over the head coach job at the UH in 1986. The team also had two players named to the all-tournament team. Karen Bell and Latisha Charles received this honor. Charles averaged 17.8 kills per match followed closely by Bell who had 17.4 kills on the average. "We really put on a show and clearly proved we were the best team in the tournament," Walton said. -Houstonian File 1990 UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON VOLLEYBALL (front); Ashley Mulkey, Karina Faber, Norah Simpson, Latisha Charles (middle);Leslie Sadleir, Tina Thompson, (back);Ginger Wittkof- ski, Janelle Harmonson, Karen Bell, Susan Rice, Bill Walton, trainer Maura Hassing, Yong Guo.
