Transcript End with a Bang The Cougars opened the 1990 volleyball campaign with the hopes they could fill the spots of two All-SWC players,Julie Gates and Tina Johnson, who both graduated in the spring. The Lady Coogs were also without the services of senior Leslie Sadlier and junior Janelle Harmonson due to injuries. Coach Bill Walton knew he had three quality players to start with, the rest was still to be decided. He had the soft touch of setter Sue Rice, and the raw power of hitters Karen Bell and Latisha Charles. The season started very shakily as Coach Walton tried to find the right combinations, and the Coogs were only 6-7. From that point on the Lady Cougars went 18-8 and finished third in the SWC. This run was sparked by inspired play from Latisha Charles, who finished as the team leader in kills, digs, and blocks, showing her versatility. Although the Lady Cougars finished the season strong. They weren't extended a bid for a repeat appearance in the NCAA tournament. Not to let this snubbing get them down, the Coogs were determined to prove themselves at the Women's Invitational Volleyball Championship in Knoxville. There the Cougars played *'almost perfect", according to a proud Bill Walton, winning the tournament with six straight victories. The University of Houston should be proud of its team, which overcame adversities that might have overwhelmed lesser teams to finish with a 24-15 record and a postseason tournament champsionship. Janelle Harmonson smacked the daylights out of this ball during warmups early in the season. Her loss due to injury greatly troubled Coach Walton and further deprived the Lady Cougar squad of experience.
