Transcript Cougar V-J Day The Cougars closed out a successful season by outshooting Arizona State 62-45 in the Coca-Cola Bowl, played in Tokyo. Houston finishes the year 10-1. With the win, they climbed back into the Associated Press Top 10, at number nine. Quarterback David Klingler had a brilliant day, conpleting 41 of 70 passes for 716 yards and seven touchdowns. He was intercepted once. Klingler put the finishing touch on the year with his 54th touchdown pass of the season, a 95- yard throw to inside receiver Manny Hazard. Klingler threw for 5,140 yards on the season, which was a new record, until Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer of BYU broke it. Playing in his final game as a Cougar, Hazard caught eight passes for 201 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver John Brown III, who came on strong in the second half of the season, also had a good game, catching touchdown passes of 27, 24 and 42 yards. Like Hazard, superback Chuck Weatherspoon completed his UH career in Tokyo, rushing for 66 yards on 10 carries, with another 94 on 12 receptions. Perphaps the sweetest touchdown for the Cougars came in the fourth quarter when Klingler connected with senior inside receiver Kody smith on a 7-yard pass. For Smith, who came to the Cougars as a walk-on, it was the and only touchdown of his college career. Safe in the Pocket, David Klingler reared back to shoot the Aggies' lights out.
