Photo courtesy of AT. 238 Kb Despite the Greek image of partying all the time, fraternities and sororities at UH put much of their time into helping others. Philanthropies, or service projects for different groups are as varied as the groups themselves. "We try to do quite a bit," said Sigma Chi president Jason Lee. "We keep pretty busy in that area." The largest fundraiser Sigma Chi does is the annual Fight Night, raising money for the Cleo Wallis Center in Colorado; Sigma Chi's national philanthropy. The center is for children with slight brain damage. Zeta Phi Beta, president Rauchelle Jones said they are kept busy with many philanthropies as well. Their national project, The Stork's Nest, is a redistribution center for baby items, given to mothers whose income is below a certain level. Zeta members also work to fight illiteracy by volunteering their time in tutorial programs and reading clinics. Delta Upsilon holds their annual Jon-A-Thon each Spring, collecting donations for the Houston Food Bank. At this event, members sit on a toilet for 100 hours, said Delta Upsilon member Barry Turcotte. Delta Upsilon also holds a Star of Hope Christmas party. Presents are distributed to the kids by Santa Claus. Turcotte said for some kids last year, it was the first time they had a real Christmas.-Marjorie Goodman » Bikers tune their machines prior to the Sigma Nu Bike Race benefiting M.D. Anderson Cancer Center .Photo by Donatello Pitts.
