Transcript t. Col. Robert Shaffer, professor of military science, described the scene of ROTC cadets rappel- ling down the side of the six story building at Rice University, "A confidence builder." This helps build up their skills, and besides, it's fun," Shaffer said. The furrowed brows and anxious eyes of some students looking down at the ground from the roof of building may have dampened the fun part, but once on the ground a number of them wanted ROTC Cadets Hqaq Ok To Ih Tradition 0\j Rappelling to try again. Rappelling described as a controlled fall from a very tall place. Using ropes routed through a metal oval, a rappeller could descend from great heights at a slow pace. While stepping backwards off a building seemed dangerous, Shaffer said there haven't been any serious injuries to the cadets during the four semesters he's been supervising the training. "We occasionally have a rope burn on someone's hand but that's because they're using the wrong hand to control the speed of their descent," Shaffer said First-time rappeller, UH political science sophomore Lisa Vinson, said she was "a little scared when I first stepped off (the building ledge) but I pretty much walked down." About 60 ROTC cadets from Houston-area colleges took part in the rappelling exercise, which is held each semester. - Edward Lee Mcintosh. 194 ^ %P~ Organizations ioyd Perez, UH Chemical Engineering freshman descends the face of the Rice University biology building.
