Poor choice of materials for its 1981 construction has caused rotting columns and leaky pipes, said Ahmad Kashani, assistant director of operations for the residence hall. Kashani said Cougar Place was built during Houston's boom years, and the high demand for housing affected the quality of its construction. He said brick would have lasted much longer, but wood was cheaper. Kashani said Residence Halls Operations plans to replace the wood with vinyl siding. He said spraying for termites slows them down, but as long as leaks persist they'll keep coming. Mehiar Mehran, a Cougar Place resident and employee of Kashani, said the 8-by-8-inch beams supporting the second-floor porches are so bad they probably serve no more than a cosmetic purpose. Ray Dominque, area coordinator at Cougar Place, said that because of limited funding, the university couldn't use expensive materials such as brick. He said residents haven't minded. -Crosby King PARTY ON THE PATIO.A Cougar Place resident tries to swap away the rain with a cooking utensil during a cloudy get together.
