Transcript The "Tower of Cheyenne" sculp- x ture, in front of M.D. Anderson library, worked for the "Thank You Houston" party, and then it stopped working. Houstonian photo. For the second time in its history, the fountain located in the Anne Bulter Plaza across for the M.D. Anderson Memorial Library worked. The fountain, a sculpture named *'Tower of Cheyenne," was activated for the eost-summit Thank You [ouston Party. However, after the party was over, it was again inoperative. The fountain was built in 1978 to accomodate the Cor-ten steel sculpture, designed by Peter Forakis, an American artist. But after it was installed, it was determined that the fountain could not function becasue the Cor-ten would corrode from the chlorine necessary in maintaining the pool. The 40 foot-high, $12,000 sculpture was commissioned in 1972. It was installed as a fountain sometime in the summer of 1978. Nancy Hixon, Uni- Dry Spell versity Collections said she found a note in her files that the fountain itself may have cost $75,000, but she was unsure of the valdiity of that figure. No one on campus can verify it. Talk of reconstruction of the fountain has been considered; however, the funds are available. The fountain was tena- tively scheduled to run for President Bush's Thank You Houston party, Susan Warren, assistant to the president of student afairs, said. But the fountain did not run. The Cullen Famaily Plaza Reflection Pool, located across from Ezekiel Cullen, was rigged with temporary plumbing to work for the occasion. 4'The pool can't be renovated at this time, but we are doing what we can to make it operational for one day," Warren said prior to the party. Warren said The Houston Summit Host Committee, those responsible for planning the summit- related events, told her to get a reasonable estimate on the cost of getting the fountain to run. The Physical Plant put in a temporary system, which was tested before the party. Herbert Collier, Physical Plant director, said they planned to drain and shut down the pool the day after the party. Definite plans to renovate the entire reflection pool haven't been made. So while a decision was being made on whether to fix the sculpture, the students passed by and admired a fountain that did not work. -Courtesy The Daily Cougar Lucila Soria, Pharmacy, Fr.
