Transcript Challenges President looks ahead arguerite Ross Barnett enthusiati- M cally began her first day as UH president. Barnett met with Faculty Senate President Stuart Hall, Students' Association President Paul Hogland and Staff Association President Craig Ness. She then met with administrative staff, and invited the media to sit in at the end of the meeting. Barnett said she spent the administrative staff meeting "going over my goals for UH for the next three-to-five years so that group will have an idea how our dialogue will be structured and those challenges I see facing the university." She outlined seven challenges facing the university. "My first challenge is in enhancing our national and international stature by increasing research," she said. Her second challenge was the maintenance and support of the quality of the undergraduate program and the quality of its instruction. She included the need for additional scholarships for academically talented students and minority stu dents. UH needed to examine its community service, she said, and form a partnership with business for ecomonic development. To meet her goal, Barnett was looking for public support to increase revenues, she said. UH needed to examine its planning efforts to make certain it is as cost effective as possible, she said. "Groups formally considered minority in many sectors of society, including public school system, will become the majority. More and more of these students will become students at UH and this pool will be entering the workplace in the 21st century," she said. She also said UH needed to support its faculty and staff to maintain high morale. "Faculty and staff salaries are important in an institution. We want to maintain enthusiasm for the challenges ahead," she said.-Debbie Housel president Barnett spoke to the graduates. Photo by Tony Bullard.
