Transcript Rah, rah, rah, sis, boom, BAH! -Kinger It's just about what you can expect from an urban commuter school. -Michael Smith ^ Spirit should be consistent from the beginning not just suddenly appear at the end. -Quinn 99 It really stinks because most students go to work rather than go to leisure events. -Chris Nikirk Spirit here is getting better, but it just is not good enough! ^Marjorie Goodman^ People are beginning to realize that UH is more than just a commuter school. -Kristyn Roberts JLAiring one of several exciting football games, several ecstatic fans pack the Astrodome. This display of enthusiasm was a indication of rising Cougar spirit. Photo by Thomas Nguyen. Jit 2l campus barbeque, students could be found supporting t-shirts showing their Cougar pride. Unfortunately, many students also chose to sur> port other school. Photo by Thomas Nguyen. J& 60 *~%*P- Student Lift SPIRIT?! I Jo Coogs! Spirit at UH, having risen tremendously since last year's grasp of the Heisman Trophy, was at an all time high. Or, so it seemed. Spirit (or the lack of it) brought aoout numerous reactions from the University's diverse population. Shannon Collins, a member of Zeta Tau Alpha said, "I think there is spirit at UH; but it's with the campus organizations like the Greeks. Because we're a commuter school, the student body isn't as spirited as it could be." Since the University was such a commuter school, it was the residents, greeks, and members of other campus organizations that were seen promoting Cougar Pride. — Students using lack of time to get involved was a very invalid excuse. Many of the school s "spirited" population held jobs ana still found time to participate. Some students demonstrated school spirit by purchasing "cougar merchandise.' Gayle Anderson, a employee at the university's bookstore said, "People do buy UH items. But, buis- ness is not as good as it should be. It's strange; 1 always see people walk around campus wearing logos and emblems from other universities." Jocelyn Imperial summed it up best. Imperial said, "This is a great university. I hate when our own students make derogatory remarks about our school. It you don't like it If you don't like it here at UH, leavel I just wish that everyone did their share of showing some Cougar pride. ^a Time was the main excuse used by here, leave! I Just wish everyone did many in explaining their lack of in- their share of showing some Cougar volvement or entnuusiasm for the Pride."-Jonathan Imperial university. Mary Herring said, "I don't have time to get involved. I go to work straight from school." /his student is obviously confused about which school he is attending, for displayed on his back window are stickers displaying pride for both UH and Texas A & M University. Photo by Thomas Nguyen. C/ne of the sore spots for the Cougar athletic teams is the lack of student participation and attendance at games. Numerous seats at the UNLV vs UH football game were left vacant. Photo by Thomas Nguyen. & School Spirit ~ty}P~ 61
