H° fomecoming began with a bang at the 1990 Homecoming Kick Off Celebration. The homecoming court was announced by President Marguerite Barnett as the suspense mounted for the naming of the actual King and Queen. The UC was packed with students getting a head start on homecoming week. After the kick off, the activities were numerous including a campus blood drive, a comedy show, the pep rally, fireworks, bonfire, and, of course, the football game against TCU. Things promised to be hot as multitudes of Cougar fans flocked to the pep rally at Lynn Eusan Park. After the pep rally students continued on to the bonfire and fireworks show. Despite rainy weather, spirits soared and everyone looked forward to the game the next day. Before a crowd of 25,725 at the Astrodome, the Cougars jumped the Frogs 56-35 adding another win to their undefeated season. Not to be forgotten, Julie Westerland and Rick Goolsby were crowned Homecoming King and Queen. UH also presented its first annual "Parents of the Year" award. The honorees were Murray and Sharon Stinson who were nominated by their daughter, Melanie Ann Stinson. Said Murray Stinson, "I was very surprised and very proud." When the game was over, many students ended homecoming week by going to the annual Homecoming Dance or to separate parties to dance and celebrate the night away. After the flames died down and another winning homecoming safely tucked away, students settled back into their everyday ritual with a well deserved smugness and great expectations for the year to come. - Prebble McLaughlin. Ilainy conditions did not keep these Cougar fans away. They even brought an "umbrella" to keep them dry. Photo by Tony Bullard.
