Transcript A Touch of Culture £ he Houston International Festival (HIF) was coined "a brilliant success" by all those who were in attendence at the many interesting events. While being a part of a memorable experience, participants were exposed to the culture of the Japanese people and learned much about the country and its people. This year UH was contacted about being included in the festivities and was delighted to be involved. The HIF wanted to see about having a Japanese Architecture Exhibit on the campus. Said James Walker, president of the alumni association, "When we were approached by the HIF, we were quite happy and recruited a number of local firms to sponsor a reception." The reception honored more than 75 leading Japanese architects such as Fujii Hiromi. Also in attendence was Consul General Iman- The whole point is to bring two cultures together, and no better cultural expression of friendship exists than the arts. ishi of Japan. "Having the exhibit here so our students can be exposed to it, as well as the community, and hosting the Consul General, is very important for the school," said Walker. Jim Austin, chief executive officer of the HIF, said, "This is an excellent example of a great partnership — UH/HIF. The whole point is to bring two cultures together, and no better cultural expression exists than the arts." All in all the Houston International Festival was a magnificient sight to behold. The native dancers with their impressionistic dances, the native costumes and clothing of the Japanese people, and the entertainment from all parts of the world combined for a cultural experience that all involved will remember for quite some time.- Prebble McLaughlin ;^^ v< i /^)ne of several entertainers during the two ^'week long festivities of the Houston International Festival is proudly performing before the crowd of thousands.-P/ioto by Kyle Saenz.
