Transcript Placement Center Counsels Students On Job Search Assistant Vice President for Student Services Dr. David Small recommended to students that they focus on their academic goals rather than start thinking about themselves in the real world of corporate America. However, Small emphatically insisted that the sooner one began career planning, the better. And, surprisingly, Small suggested seeking career counselling before choosing an academic major. Small believed that second only to making the decision to enter college was choosing the right major. The third most important element was to ensure success after graduation. The Career Planning and Placement Center, was a full-service operation, serving students and alumni with interviewing techniques, counseling, and work search. Free aptitude and vocational testing were available to aid students in determining whether their initial, tentative academic decisions were sound. The center's JoBank had information on more than 6,000 jobs available each year. Students, who qualified for work/study programs through the Financial Aid Office, were placed in jobs through the center. More than a dozen staff professionals conduct 350 career planning workshops each year, and aid 46,000 students. The center's "career psychologists" recommended the following to ensure your future success: • Get involved with professional organizations in your major. You learn how to apply your degree to the real world. • Seek out leadership positions in those organizations. You can network in a professional capacity later. • Learn, through the center's workshops or somewhere else, the basic art of networking. • No matter what anybody tells you, remember: your GPA is immensely important. It could be what makes or breaks you in the first cut. • Use your elec- tives wisely. Complement your major field of study. For example, consider taking a communications course, if you are a marketing major . • Face the fact that the world has changed. The job used to come to the graduate... now the graduate must go to the job. -Susan Spring housands of students ea< h year visit Career Planning & Plac e- menl to find seasonal, part-time or full-time employment.
