Transcript 5 SALAD BOWL The University of Houston football team's highest peak of glory came when the Cougars were invited to play in the Salad Bowl New Year's day at Phoenix, Arizona. Gene Shannon, in top form, was the Cougar star of the day, outgain- ing the entire opposing Dayton team by rushing 175 yards on 28 carries. Shannon also scored all the touchdowns in the Cougars' 26-21 victory over the University of Dayton Flyers. Randy Owens, Warren Ramsey, Howard Clapp, Buck Miller, and Lloyd Holloway did outstanding blocking which helped Shannon on his way to victory. Both teams scored once during the first period. In the second quarter the Flyers scored twice on two long passes, while the Cougars had only one six-pointer. Houston added the winning points in tHe third quarter, one on a sustained drive, another by cashing in on a Dayton fumble. Jackie Howton, Johnny O'Hara, Ken Reese and Jim Van Haverbeke led a Cougar back field defense in the second half which played a big part in holding the Flyers scoreless the rest of the way. While Shannon was leading ground-gainer, Randy Owens and Warren Ramsey also contributed valuable yardage, Ramsey getting 83 yards in 13 tries, and Owens 75 in nine. Houston 26 Dayton 21 Cougar and Detroit captains meet with of- ficals before the Salad Bowl game gets under way. Vic Hampel takes a pass from Clatterbuck for a 30-yard gain. The Cougars bring down a Dayton Flyer.
