Transcript Different season, same ending CO wniM tit The Lady Cougars basketball pulled a 180-degree turn on the UH men's team in the 1995-96 season-playing a polar opposite to their male counterparts. The men had guarded expectations going into the season, starting poorly, playing outstanding basketball for most of the regular season, and fizzling in the conference playoffs. The women were shooting for the final Southwest Conference title going into the season (at least according to sixth-year head coach Jessie Kenlaw), started well, played lackluster basketball for most of the season, and exploded in the conference playoffs. Kenlaw had reason to have high expectations, returning four starters from the 1995 team that finished 14-14, with the fifth starter being the highly acclaimed 6'4" center Nakia Hill after a red-shirting in 1995. But only three players were able to get the job done consistently for the Lady Cougars. Three-time AII-SWC team selection junior forward Pat Luckey (the third selection being this season) had another spectacular season for the Lady Cougars, averaging better than 21 points and just under seven rebounds a game. Senior point guard Tanda Rucker also put in a solid season, averaging almost 12 points and six assists, and sophomore power forward Jennifer Jones had eight rebounds and 10.4 points per contest but the talent and the Luckey-ness for the most part stopped there for UH. Hill did not make it into the spring 244 mfmmmmmHmxmmmiimmmmmmm semester, dismissed indefinitely for undisclosed reasons just before conference play began, and a lack of a deep bench hurt the Lady Cougars throughout the season. The Lady Cougars still won two of their first three conference games, including a 97-77 thumping of Rice by virtue of a 43- point effort for Luckey. But then the Lady Cougars lost nine of their next 11 games to finish the regular season 11-15 and a worst ever 4-10 in conference play, and it seemed like the last SWC season ever would leave a bitter taste in all UH fans' mouths. However, UH made a lot of noise in Dallas at the Dr. Pepper SWC Classic in March. The Lady Cougars went in as the sixth seed, and faced a talented Southern Methodist Mustangs on SMU's home court, whose two- game sweep of UH in the regular season included a 41-point drubbing in the season opener. Someone forgot to mention this to the starting Lady Cougars back court, which proceeded to bomb the Lady Mustangs into the stone age. Rucker and Felicia Comeaux combined for 48 points and hit eight second-half three-pointers to lead UH to the stunning 81- 76 upset and a ticket to the second round. There they faced perennially powerful Texas Tech, ranked ninth in the nation, who had also swept the Lady Cougars in the regular season. However, it was not meant to be for UH. Lady Raiders' Michi Atkins had 24 second-half points and Rene Hanebutt had a buzzer-beating, game-winning lay-up advance Tech by virtue of a 77-75 victory. M VOiTfltf
