Transcript UH President honored for building international ties The Universidad Tecnologica de Santiago (UTESA) in the Dominican Republic presented University of Houston President Glenn Goerke with an honorary degree Nov. 12., 1995. The degree of Doctor Honoris Causa recognized Goerke's contributions toward establishing stronger ties between higher education institutions in the United States and Latin America. "In today's global village, it is important to provide our students with a truly international perspective, and our faculty with the opportunity to exchange ideas and resources with our neighbors in Latin America as well as with other nations, throughout the world," Goerke says. UTESA is the largest private university in the Dominican Republic and has campuses in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata and several other cities. Goerke accepted the honorary degree during the 1995 commencement ceremony in Santiago de los Caballeros. A member of the executive committee of the International Association of University Presidents, Goerke emphasizes the need for building partnerships, especially in the Western Hemisphere. "The nations of Latin America and the Caribbean are vital allies in a global economy which is shaped by many forces. We are recognizing more and more that this nation cannot be isolated and remain economically strong," Goerke explains. "We must all work together to improve and protect the quality of life for the people of all nations." As the tenth president of UH, Goerke has turned a major part of his concentration to building strong international linkages. He is also an active member in the Interamerican University Council for Economic and Social Development, which is an independent, nonprofit association of post-secondary academic institutions, and provides technical and advisory services to improve economic and social development in Central and South America. "As Houston's chief public education institution, UH closely allies its mission to the needs and objectives of the city," Goerke says. "With Houston's work in the international community growing, UH is establishing partnerships with other institutions, especially other universities, to complement the work of Houston's leadership." -Ivana Segvic m
